Honor

I learned last night from [livejournal.com profile] sovay that eight stories and one poem from last year’s issues of Not One of Us had been honorably mentioned in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror: Eighteenth Annual Collection. Here’s the list (author, title, issue number):

Danny Adams, "A Deconstruction of Beauty" (#32)
Marc Lecard, "Night Window" (#31)
Brian Maycock, "Where's the Matter?" (#32)
Karen R. Porter, poem "Unseen" (#32)
Kate Riedel, "The Pear Orchard” (#31)
Patricia Russo, "Suckling" (#31)
Mark Steensland, "The Barn" (#32)
Sonya Taaffe, "Another Coming" (#32)
Sonya Taaffe, "Retrospective" (#31)

Thanks to Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link, and Gavin Grant for selecting these works. Ellen also had this to say in her summation of the year in horror:

Not One of Us, edited by John Benson, brought out two good issues in '04. Not all the stories are dark but they're at the very least strange, and most of them are well worth reading. Some of the best are by Sonya Taaffe, Mark Steensland, Danny Adams, Marc Lecard, and Patricia Russo. Also, Subnatural, Benson's annual one-off, had good mixed-genre work.

Congratulations are also in order for Sonya Taaffe, who had ten (!) stories and poems honorably mentioned, which must be close to a record for a single year. I’m especially happy because I published two of the stories.

Congratulations on a banner year! :-)

Thanks, once again, for publishing my story!

(And I suppose I should be envious that Sonya had ten mentions, but I think she's probably ten times better than me, so the math works out. :) )

It's not a record: a fellow by the name of John Connolly got twelve honorable mentions this year. I must find out who he is . . .

(Thanks!)
