On the morning of April 6, 2013, Johnathon and my older son Karl were wed at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield (MA). The ceremony was originally to have been performed outdoors on the beautiful grounds and in the bright sunshine. But because the temperature was 35 degrees and a brisk breeze was blowing, the festivities were moved inside the Nature Center.
Nature was a theme throughout. Instead of a guest book, we all signed an Audubon print, which they intend to frame. Johnathon and Karl gave the attendees sugar maple saplings to carry home and plant, to grow with their relationship. I have two of them in my back yard.
The ceremony was conducted by a Justice of the Peace. Johnathon and Karl each read vows they had written themselves. The atmosphere was informal, but I felt a sense of communion that I don’t think I had ever experienced before, except at my own wedding. Everyone had a grand time.
