Friends at survey research conferences

lesser_celeryI was going to post pictures of my family, just to prove they weren’t entirely fictional. But if I post any of the photos I currently have of Anke, she’ll defenestrate me sooner than scheduled.
So instead I’m posting a few pictures taken at recent public opinion research conferences. For those who don’t know about my paying job, I’m managing director of a survey research group at a school of public health. One of the friends whose faces appear below the cut has a Not One of Us connection, and my mug is there, too. Yes, I occasionally go to writers’ cons, too, but for some reason I never remember to bring my camera. I’ll see if I can remedy that at Readercon this weekend.

On the left is Lisa Ferraro Parmelee, editor of the online public opinion magazine Public Opinion Pros. The dude on the right, that would be moi. I moonlight as associate editor and occasional columnist (“What Do I Know”) for Lisa's magazine. This picture was taken at last year’s AAPOR (American Association for Public Opinion Research) conference in Montreal, not many hours before Lisa and I took to the dance floor.
I snapped this picture of long-time friend Tina Reigel at dinner the night before we presented a paper at the Southern Association for Public Opinion Research conference in Raleigh last October. Some of you will know her as former associate editor of Not One of Us (1992-95). She has also co-authored several journal articles with me, and back in the Olde Days, we did consulting on surveys about end-of-life issues. She now has a successful career at GlaxoSmithKline, the big pharmaceutical company, so we don’t do death any more.
Last and not least is Melissa Herrmann, friend for more than a decade, executive vice president of ICR/International Communications Research, the survey firm we use most often for our polling, and my co-author on several journal articles. During this year’s AAPOR conference in Anaheim, I took this photo during dinner at La Casa Garcia with Melissa and her family.
